When we are without a purpose in life we are like a ship without a rudder, tossed about the seas at the mercy of the current, wind and waves. During these times we experience an emotional upheaval as self-doubt creeps into our minds and permeates our souls. The effect on our physical-self alters our response to daily life, affects our diet or limits our ability to create. The absence of accomplishments opens the opportunity for self-deprecation and making excuses. We become experts at proving how bad we are and we become proficient in negating any accomplishments. We become confused, not knowing where to turn.
When in a state of confusion and despair we may have thoughts and ideas often laced with futility and hopelessness. With each thought the nervous system emits a chemical eliciting a response of feeling depressed or feeling anxious and upset. We say to ourself that there must be a better way. How can I have a dose of those good chemicals? Why is it so difficult to have a positive thought? It may seem that you are actually becoming accustomed to feeling lousy and having a difficult life. As with any chemical response the human organism can become adapted to and maybe dependent on these chemicals.
Notice how you respond in a traffic jam as you see miles of red tailights creeping along the freeway ahead of you thinking that you may not make it to your appointment on time. Your pulse quickens as you become upset and irritable. Either angry at being late or afraid of the consequences of the tardiness.
What occurs at this time is solely up to you. The car doesn’t care what time it is. What if you had all the time in the world with no appointments. Imagine having no time schedule, driving in the car with someone who you really care about while listening to your favorite music. It would be a good guess to say that you would not be so upset at the traffic. In fact, likely enjoying the slow and quiet pace. What is the difference?
The difference is our perception of what is going on. It is how we choose to experience what is happening at that moment. If you want a different life then begin the journey of becoming more aware. Research avenues of self-introspection, investigate the possibilities available in workshops or professional groups. Commit to taking your first steps, you may not know where you are going, just simply take a step.
You have no choice, now choose.
